Horses for Adoption

Currently, the only states which we work with for horse adoptions and donations are Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and West Virginia. The main breed types that we handle include Arabians, Draft Horses and Mules, Ponies, Quarter Horses, Saddle Bred, Standard Bred and Thoroughbreds.

To ensure the proper care of each horse that visits our farm, we maintain rights to every adopted equine for as long as it lives. This “Protective Ownership” means that the L&FHRF is the sole owner with the rules for adoption simple: don’t breed, race or resell any equine. By retaining ownership, we legally have the ability to reclaim a horse at any time and place it in a more suitable environment if a current situation is deemed unsatisfactory. While this “tough love” rule may seem extreme, it is founded with only the best intentions for each and every equine.

By donating a horse to the Lost and Found Horse Rescue Foundation, both owner and horse can improve their existence. Some advantages include:

  • A lifetime home with full care, love and support.
  • Tax-deductible contributions, which are usually more cost-effective than selling a horse.
  • Former owners may stay in touch with adoptive families for status reports.
  • Horses receive another opportunity to lead healthy, productive lives.

We have numerous young, healthy horses worthy of adoption here at L&FHRF. Most just need a little training, patience and, of course, some TLC. In fact, many of our adopted horses have become serious show competitors in the hunter and eventing fields. Our goal is to find the perfect horse that fits directly into your lifestyle, your home and your heart. We can be reached by phone at (717)428-9701 or e-mail: lostandfound@lfhr.org

The below pictures and corresponding write-ups provide only a basic idea of the present selection so please check often because we update the listing on a regular basis. To view a larger picture, simply double-click on any image.

Annie
  • 7-year-old
  • Paint Saddlebred
  • Mare
  • 15 hands

A pinto-saddlebred type horse, she comes with the heading of "anyone can ride this horse". She has had quite a bit of trail riding, also drives and is easy to handle, load and haul.

Beanie
  • 16-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands
A very experienced fox-hunter mare, Beanie has smooth gaits to ride, hacks out by herself and in company, trail rides, rides in the ring and is very pleasurable. She is very striking to look at with her black coat and blond eyes, and is suitable for a beginner, though apparently needs someone with confidence in their abilities.

Bijoux (On Hold)
  • 5-year-old
  • WBX
  • Mare
  • 15.1 hands
A lovely Morgan-type mare sporting wonderful English Pleasure type movement, Bijoux carries herself very naturally and energetically, nicely up in the bridle, with extended trot and hand-gallops. She is very smooth and balanced, quite lady-like and nicely broke for an experienced novice rider. Bijoux has a very pretty head and a large soft eye and really enjoys people.

Brewster
  • 6-year-old
  • American Saddlebred
  • Gelding

Slaughter rescue. This horse is very fancy and had to have been a show horse. He knows how to park, and he has very nice gaits. Currently has some foot issues which we are treating with a blacksmith. More info to come.

Buck
  • 7-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Gelding
  • 15.1 hands

Buck was rescued from slaughter and is a very handsome buckskin horse who has had very little training under saddle. We have started him, and he is doing well. He would need an experienced person to bring him along...or if you like something pretty to look at standing in your field he's your guy. Buck was in very poor condition when he arrived here, but as you can see, he is an easy keeper and has picked up weight nicely and kept it on. Buck has a kind eye and is a nice horse to work around.

Cliff
  • 4-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands
Pretty head, nice long neck and an unflappable disposition attract all of us to Cliff.  He is just ready to start under saddle work, so we cannot even call him green!  Cliff has pretty, soft gaits and is very quiet to work around, and appears to be western in movement.  We will update him as we get him saddled and started.

Update: Someone got him started but didn't finish the job!  Cliff is a western type horse, little jog trot and a bit lazy to get moving, but very cute, nice moving and comfy gaits. Needs an experienced rider (or several months with a professional trainer) to get him going.

Crickett
  • 11-year-old
  • Palomino QH
  • Mare
  • 14.3 hands

Crickett was rescued from slaughter. Whomever had her last abused this mare mentally, and she came to us with a few riding issues. She does NOT buck, rear or bolt, but she will freeze up, and that's the worst thing she will do. We have been bringing her along, and she is doing very well. At one time this mare had lots and lots of training, as she knows a whole bunch. I have had her out on trail rides. and she is coming along nicely. She loves water and mud! No issues there! And if you want to talk about comfy to ride, Cricket is your girl. She's smooth. This mare is not for a beginner, and if you have patience and knowledge to work with a horse who needs a firm but gentle hand she could be for you. I will continue to ride this horse over the winter till the right home is found for her. I really really like her and feel with the right handler, she's going to be just fine. Sound and up to date on everything.

Dragon's Wild
  • 11-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 16.3 hands

Magic is a flashy chestnut Thoroughbred gelding who is large boned, an easy keeper, and a good size for man or woman. Lives outside, always healthy and sound, wears two front shoes, good for farrier and trailering. He is a great boy with lots of personality, loves to jump quietly 3’ and is very athletic. Has always been in a regular lesson program and is currently being ridden by a trainer, has Paper Chased, Hunter Paced, was a star at a gymnastics jumping clinic given by Olympic Eventerkare and trainer Jimmy Wofford. Magic has fox hunted well, happy at checks and easy around the hounds. Good work ethic both in the ring and out. Good at trail riding, not spooky at all. Rides in a bitless bridle. Has seasonal headshaking in spring well controlled with use of nose net. Sadly being returned due to owner's time and life demands don’t allow enough time for Magic.  Please contact Karen Kaftol for appointment to see Magic and additional information. 410-654-6041 or email Karen at kkaftol@comcast.net.

Dundee
  • 6-year-old
  • Morgan Cross
  • Gelding
  • 15 hands
Dundee has had professional training for riding, and he will need an experienced rider to complete his training. This young horse is sound and just needs finishing. He would make an excellent trail or endurance prospect.

Faithful Tradition
  • 19-year-old
  • Registered Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

I went to the sale to purchase a Christmas rescue on behalf of the folks from the Tim Woolley "Barbaro" fan website, who raised money to save a horse from slaughter for Christmas. As soon as I saw her barn name was "Faith" I knew this girl was for us. A note came with her saying that she was a kids lesson horse, who also trail rides. She is sound and healthy, Faith hauls, clips and stands for the blacksmith.

Hadlee
  • Aged
  • Quarter PonyX
  • Mare
  • 13.2 hands

Hadlee is a slaughter rescue who is one very sweet pony. She is very, very broke, but can be quick. She neck reins the very best, and she goes both English and western. Hadlee does need to live out as she will get a little heavey if kept in a barn. She does great outside and gets along with everyone, has no vices and is just a really nice pony to be around. Clips, baths, will stand for children to lead and brush.

Kayleigh Karat
  • 13-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 16.2 hands
Kayleigh came through the Tranquillity Manor Program, where she jumped 2'6" - 3' courses both in the ring and out on the outside courses. She is a very capable mare in her flat work, understands flying changes and trail riding..She would make a good pony club mount, and really needs a nice teenage kid to replace the one who went off to college.

Kira
  • 12-year-old
  • Pinto Draft X
  • Mare
  • 14.3 hands

Kira was rescued from slaughter. She is a very solidly-built horse who rides and drives. She is sound with good manners, more than likely she was used last for work and driving. With some TLC she will be fine for riding. She's got one of the kindest eyes you will see. Cute and built big enough to carry a larger rider.

Little Drew
  • 4-year-old
  • Bay and White Pinto
  • Gelding
  • 14:2 hands

Slaughter rescue. What a nice young horse--very balanced, nice mover, green under saddle and will need an intermediate rider with a trainer to bring along. Here is an opportunity to have a nice young show-quality gelding. Nice vices, kind, willing would make an excellent PC or 4H project

Madalin
  • 16-year old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

Madaline has been paper chased and trail ridden. She jumps, has a lead change and will do flat ring work as well. Madalin was returned due to her owner's lack of interest in having a horse. Madalin is a light cribber at feeding time. She is easy to work with, gets along great in the pasture, and is not mare-ish. Advanced beginner-type horse,

Megan
  • 9-year-old
  • Belgian Draft Horse
  • Mare
  • 16.3 hands

Megan was rescued from slaughter, and at the time we didn't realize just how big this mare was. She is such a sweet girl. We know that she drives and with a bit of training, riding should not be a problem. She's sound, in excellent health and will make someone a really nice riding or driving mount. I could see her being hooked up to a sleigh this winter and being a lot of fun.

Merry Legs
  • Aged
  • WelshX
  • Mare
  • 12 hands

Merry Legs was rescued from slaughter, and we think she may have been a driving pony at one time, as she really doesn't know much about riding. You can lead children on her, and she's good about that. Merry Legs is as healthy as a horse, an easy keeper and would make a wonderful companion pony. She's up to date on everything and ready to go!

Ming Toy
  • -year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands

Ming came to us nearly starved to death. He is in great need of a sponsor to help him while he is here recovering from his ordeal. Ming wants to  live and is eating well. He appears to be sound other than being severely neglected. He would make an excellent Christmas Sponsor in lieu of a gift for someone if you're looking for a creative way to do something nice.

Ms. Jackie Bee Tardy
  • 10-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Mare
  • 15:2 hands
Jackie was rescued from slaughter in poor condition. Since being here, this mare has picked up lots of weight and is a very easy keeper. She came with a note that said she belonged to a 14-yearr-old girl who had to give her up because her dad lost his job. She had last been used as a broodmare, but the papers say she's worked cows. We have trail ridden her, and she's easy out on the trail. Jackie is a nice mare who would make an intermediate rider a very nice riding horse. She's sound and ready to go.

Oscar
  • 9-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Gelding
  • 16 hands

Nice moving big-bodied gelding, steady ride.  A bit tentative to relaxing until he knows you, but very obedient and willing to please.  Although Oscar doesn't completely neck-rein, he does have a soft western jog in addition to a regular trot.

UPDATE: A large bodied quarter horse type, this red dun gelding is just a plain nice guy.  Oscar thrives on attention and hugs, is an uncomplicated ride and has lovely smooth gaits. Although he looks like a western horse, we feel Oscar really wants to be an English pleasure mount. He is large enough to carry a tall rider, and would probably ride well for an advanced novice rider.

Rumplestilskin
  • 8-year-old
  • Standardbred
  • Gelding
  • 14.2 hands
Rumple can walk trot and with right trainer could get the canter.  We have not worked with him under saddle over the past year much.  Some other things to know about Rumple. He is very very quiet and loves trail rides and water. In fact, we have taken him swimming and he LOVES it.  He loads well, vets very well, great for dentist and farrier.  He still has a little boy personality and is very curious and watches all activity in the barn.

Savannah
  • 2-year-old
  • Crossbred Pony
  • Mare
  • 13:2 hands
Savanna was rescued from slaughter. She is a young, green pony who would make an excellent Pony Club or 4-H project. She's now w-t-c and is a nice mover. She is good by herself. Savanna is cute pony with unlimted potential. Come take a peek-- you will be glad you did.

Wampum's Thunder
  • 16-year-old
  • Appaloosa
  • Gelding
  • 15.1 hands

“Wampum’s Thunder” is a wonderful, safe, and dependable participant for low key recreational and trail riding. He has been used by several different kids at local shows and as a Pony Club mount for foxhunting, cross-country, show jumping, dressage, etc. He is perfect for a child or small adult novice or timid rider as he is willing, honest, and steady, but not too forward. He is smooth and easy to ride, very sound and sane, and a very easy keeper; health issue does prevent him from being a serious showing/competition candidate. Up to date on all shots, deworming and farrier. “Free-Lease” or purchase. For further details, email  Elizabeth: shafer_elizabeth@hotmail.com.
